About 25 percent of the world’s insecticide use and more than 10 percent of the world’s pesticide goes to cotton crops. Pesticides, bleaches, and other harsh chemicals can remain in the fibers of cotton even after washing, and are easily absorbed by our skin. Our children are the most sensitive to chemical exposure and their immune systems are not equipped to handle toxin overload. Not only is the conventional cotton "crop" exposed to a multitude of chemicals, but during the process of converting raw cotton into finished textiles, chemicals such as petroleum scours, softeners, brighteners, heavy metals, flame and soil retardants, ammonia and formaldehyde, are added to the product. Choosing organic cotton products can help lessen the effects of these toxins on your child's system.
